Q. What need to know to install a software?
Answer: The following are installation procedures for DOS. Windows 95 and windows NT Server or Workstation is different (check hardware compatible list first, then follows instructions on screen. Most Win95 or WinNT are on CD so the trick is "how to install your CD-Rom?" so that software can "see/detect" it and continue installation).
- Install O/S - you've got to install operating system such as Microsoft MS-DOS 6.22 first. This can be done by inserting the first bootable setup diskette, the setup program will ask you make selcetion for partition(s) then go on automatically. Beware of some old BIOS systems that need "dynamic drive overlay" (driver provided by HD manufacturer) to recognize EIDE HD (540 MB or bigger). This kind of HD with two modified system hidden files and modified command interpreter on HD, do not overwrite those three files otherwise your get only 528 MB space on HD.
- Install Windows - same like DOS, just insert setup diskette into floppy drive, type "a:setup" (or d:setup if install from CD-Rm) then go. Don't forget to hook up mouse before installation begins, Microsoft Windows setup program will automatically detect and figure mouse for you. You can type "msd" (a DOS utility) to check hardware and software setup to see if everything works okay.
- Install drives - install sound card, CD-Rom and other drivers after DOS and Windows is installed. And backup two modified files "config.sys" and "autoexec.bat" to somewhere just in case the last driver install cause problem and we can go back to previous setup and debug it.
- Install memmaker - Drivers take spaces of base memory, you can type "mem" (a DOS utiliyt) to check what's the largest executed file size is, definitely you need to use "memmaker" (another useful DOS utility) to load all drivers to high memory area so that leave more base memory for your programs.
- Make back-up - After memmaker is finished and works properly, the software installation is done. Besides a backup of "config.sys" and "autoexec.bat" for each step of different driver installed, a whole working unit's programs backup is suggested. And a good rule is backup your data as close as possible. A virus or hard drive crashed might happen to anybody anytime. < - October, 1996. - >
